Computers will baby sit us.

How people will use computers in the future has always been a baffling topic for the heads of many companies. What will be the future application of computers beyond social networking and web browsing as we do use them now. Although every CEO must appear with a tangible vision of the future to boost shareholder confidence which sometimes leads to miraculously sounding ideas, I think that at the base of that CEOs mind and indeed in the minds of many people the ultimate question of the ultimate use of computers has remained somewhat an enigma.

We have focused on increasing the capabilities of the computer from increased processor power to memory, questions still surface our minds from time to time, like if the computer is the best thing humanity has ever invented will it continue to be so or will it be trumped by an even greater innovation in the future.

Most proponents of artificial general intelligence have a ready answer, computers will rule us and take over the world and work for their own purpose whether they will leave anything for us or not is an open question.

My theory about the future use of Artificial General Intelligence is this: Computers will baby sit us. Computers are already smarter than us in most of the cognitive task we engage in on a day to day basis. My idea here is that computers will not desire to take over the world, rather AGI will develop in such a way that the major app of the day will be one that takes care of our every need, both physically, mentally and emotionally.

We will relate to the computer in the future like most people relate to their god on a daily basis. The prayer of the future would be asking your computer what you need to do today that will make your day more fruitful. Unlike the mass digital personalities of today like Apple Siri, Google Now, Alexa etc. the future machines will be more customized, more local, more personal and more private than these current digital personalities. Our virtual assistants of the near future will be avatars of our own customization. They will be intelligent in every sense of the word. Most of them will work to earn money for us online, do our digital work, shop for us manage our finance with as little confirmation from us as possible. As these programs prove to be more competent we will gradually trust them with more and more of our tasks. Just like programmers can design computers to do their bidding everyone will program their avatars by endless customization, with features that we include that are only available to us and may not even be available to the company that own the base intelligence. A sever the size of a tablet will serve as a machine of sufficient capacity to run all the intelligence we need that we will not need to connect to a massive cloud provider to provide us with intelligence. These devices will be so personal and so intelligent that stealing them will be almost useless to the thief. The non-standard encryption they will use will be so sophisticated that it will be virtually impossible for a human being to break.

We will become so attached to these machines and trust them so much that we will ask for their opinions on many things we want to do and most of the time we will follow their superior advice, we will learn to trust them because many times when we go against their advice we will end up with sub-optimal results. Rich people who can afford a robot will merely upload their software unto the humanoid or other shaped machine and communicate with it like a normal human.

Many people will type to their Virtual assistants, others will talk to them, others will develop custom gestures for communications, others will go ahead and develop a completely new spoken, written language or visual, spatial, temporal means of communicating with their machine. Many of these languages might not have existed ever before and might be impossible to understand by other people.

Humanity will not be vanquished by AGI, because they will not be motivated by anything, there will be no ‘I’ in them, only the one we give them, they will serve as faithfully as a calculator. They will generate new ideas that were not pre-coded into their consciousness, we will not know what is going on inside their consciousness nor will they know what is going on inside ours. We will just accept them like interfaces the same way they accept us.
